Role:
An ICT Project Engineer plays a pivotal role in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems with electrical infrastructure. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining ICT solutions such as structured cabling, networking, security systems, and automation that support electrical systems in both residential and commercial buildings. The engineer will collaborate with electrical engineers, project managers, and clients to ensure the seamless integration of electrical and ICT systems throughout the construction and commissioning phases of the projects.
Key Responsibilities:
ICT System Design & Implementation:
- Designing ICT solutions for residential and commercial electrical systems, including structured cabling, network infrastructure, smart home systems, and security solutions (e.g., CCTV, access control, fire alarm systems).
- Plan and integrate networking solutions (routers, switches, wireless access points) and communication systems (telephony, intercoms, data centers) within the electrical infrastructure of the building.
- Collaborate with the electrical design team to ensure that the ICT systems are compatible with the buildings electrical layout and power supply.
Project Coordination & Execution:
- Work closely with project managers and contractors to plan and execute ICT-related aspects of residential and commercial electrical projects.
- Ensure timely installation and commissioning of ICT systems, in accordance with project schedules and specifications.
- Oversee the installation of structured cabling, network components, security systems, and other ICT devices, ensuring high-quality work in line with design specifications.
- Coordinate with vendors and third-party contractors to procure necessary materials and equipment for ICT systems.
Testing, Troubleshooting, and Commissioning:
- Conduct testing of ICT systems (e.g., network, security, automation systems) to ensure proper operation and integration with the electrical infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during installation, commissioning, and post-installation phases.
- Ensure the seamless integration of electrical systems with the ICT infrastructure, including ensuring that cabling is correctly laid and systems are properly configured.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare detailed documentation for all ICT system installations, including network layouts, wiring diagrams, configuration details, and user manuals.
- Maintain comprehensive records of all activities, including the completion of tests, issues encountered, and resolutions.
- Provide regular progress reports to the project manager and client stakeholders, highlighting key milestones and challenges.
Collaboration with Electrical Teams:
- Work closely with electrical engineers to ensure that ICT solutions complement and enhance electrical systems, ensuring smooth operation of power systems, smart home integrations, and energy management solutions.
- Ensure synergy between ICT and electrical systems during the installation of components such as lighting controls, building management systems, and smart electrical grids.
System Maintenance and Support:
- Provide technical support and ongoing maintenance for ICT systems once they are live, ensuring they continue to function optimally.
- Offer training to clients (residential or commercial) on the operation and troubleshooting of ICT systems, such as home automation, security monitoring, or network management.
- Provide guidance on future upgrades and system optimization to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of ICT solutions.
Client Interaction & Customer Satisfaction:
- Serve as a point of contact for clients concerning ICT system-related queries or issues.
- Ensure that clients are satisfied with the quality, functionality, and performance of the ICT solutions provided.
- Offer personalized recommendations for improving or expanding ICT capabilities within residential and commercial properties.
Compliance & Standards Adherence:
- Ensure that all ICT systems and installations comply with local regulations, safety standards, and industry best practices (e.g., ANSI/TIA-568, ISO/IEC 11801 for cabling).
- Implement cybersecurity protocols and ensure network security standards are followed for both residential and commercial installations.
- Ensure all electrical and ICT components meet quality standards, manufacturer specifications, and warranty requirements.
Innovation & Technology Updates:
- Stay up to date with emerging trends and innovations in ICT and electrical systems, particularly in areas like smart home automation, IoT, energy-efficient systems, and building management.
- Introduce new technologies and solutions that can improve the efficiency, performance, and sustainability of residential and commercial projects.
Technical Expertise:
- ICT Systems Knowledge: Strong understanding of structured cabling, network design, telecommunications, and data systems (LAN, WAN, fiber optics, wireless).
- Electrical Integration: Understanding of how ICT systems integrate with electrical systems in residential and commercial buildings, such as lighting, power distribution, energy management, and building automation.
- Security Systems: Familiarity with the installation and maintenance of CCTV, access control, and alarm systems.
- Building Automation: Experience with smart home systems, smart meters, and energy management systems.
Project Management:
- Project Execution: Ability to manage the execution of ICT-related tasks within larger electrical contracting projects, adhering to deadlines and budgets.
- Coordination Skills: Ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, including electrical engineers, project managers, contractors, and vendors.
- Risk Management: Ability to foresee potential issues during implementation and proactively mitigate risks to project timelines and quality.
Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting:
- Strong skills in diagnosing issues related to ICT systems, such as network connectivity problems, system integration challenges, and device malfunctions.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex network setups and integrate diverse systems in residential and commercial settings.
Communication Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for dealing with clients, project teams, and stakeholders.
- Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical clients and offer clear instructions for the use and maintenance of ICT systems.
- Skilled in preparing clear documentation for installations, configurations, and system designs.
Leadership & Team Collaboration:
- Ability to work independently, as well as lead a team of technicians, engineers, and subcontractors on ICT project components.
- Ability to train and guide team members, ensuring that they adhere to technical standards and best practices.
Electrical Knowledge :
- Knowledge of electrical codes and standards related to low-voltage installations, electrical systems, and integration with ICT systems.
- Hands-on experience with electrical installations or electrical components used in residential and commercial buildings.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in ICT engineering, with a focus on systems integration in residential and commercial projects.
- Proven experience working in the electrical contracting industry, particularly in projects that require coordination between electrical and ICT systems.
