Role:
The profile is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment in a power plant. This role ensures the electrical systems operate efficiently and safely, supporting continuous power generation. The manager will supervise a team of electrical engineers and technicians, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and optimizing plant performance while minimizing downtime and repair costs.
Key Responsibilities:
Electrical System Maintenance:
- Manage and oversee the maintenance of electrical equipment and systems in the power plant, including generators, transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, motors, and control systems.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance (PM) schedules to ensure optimal performance and extend the life of electrical systems.
- Supervise electrical shutdowns, routine maintenance, and emergency repairs to minimize downtime and ensure system reliability.
Team Leadership and Supervision:
- Lead, direct, and mentor a team of electrical engineers and technicians, ensuring tasks are completed on time and to the required quality standards.
- Assign work schedules, oversee daily operations, and ensure that team members adhere to safety protocols.
- Provide training to the maintenance team on electrical systems, troubleshooting, and repair techniques.
Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:
- Oversee the identification and resolution of electrical faults and equipment failures in a timely and efficient manner to avoid plant downtime.
- Investigate complex electrical system failures and coordinate the necessary repairs.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions to avoid future occurrences.
Compliance and Safety Management:
- Ensure that electrical maintenance work adheres to safety standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices (e.g., OSHA, NFPA).
- Develop, review, and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for electrical maintenance work to minimize safety hazards.
- Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with electrical safety protocols and workplace safety regulations.
Budget and Resource Management:
- Develop and manage the maintenance budget, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and that maintenance costs are controlled.
- Procure electrical parts, tools, and equipment required for maintenance and repairs, ensuring availability of critical spare parts to minimize downtime.
- Track and report maintenance costs, identify cost-saving opportunities, and optimize spending without compromising on system reliability.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
- Monitor the performance of electrical equipment and systems using diagnostic tools and control systems.
- Analyze maintenance logs and reports to assess system health and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare regular reports for senior management, detailing maintenance activities, system performance, incidents, and recommendations for improvements.
Continuous Improvement and Upgrades:
- Identify opportunities for system improvements and propose enhancements to increase efficiency, reduce energy consumption, or improve safety.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies in the electrical power sector and incorporate advancements into the plant's electrical systems where applicable.
- Recommend and implement upgrades to electrical systems and infrastructure to improve plant performance and reliability.
Coordination with Other Departments:
- Collaborate with other departments such as operations, mechanical, and civil engineering to ensure smooth coordination during maintenance and repair activities.
- Communicate effectively with plant management, operational staff, and external contractors regarding electrical systems' status, upgrades, and emergency response.
Documentation and Records Management:
- Maintain accurate records of all electrical maintenance activities, including work orders, parts used, repair logs, and service contracts.
- Ensure that electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and maintenance manuals are updated and readily available.
- Ensure proper documentation for all electrical safety measures and compliance audits.
Technical Expertise:
- Power Plant Electrical Systems: Strong knowledge of power plant electrical equipment, including generators, transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and motor control centers.
- Control Systems: Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of control systems such as SCADA, DCS (Distributed Control Systems), and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers).
- Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Advanced troubleshooting skills to quickly identify faults in electrical circuits, devices, and systems.
- Electrical Standards & Codes: Knowledge of industry standards and codes such as NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), IEEE, IEC, and local electrical safety regulations.
Leadership & Team Management:
- Proven leadership and people management skills, with the ability to lead a multidisciplinary team and work in a collaborative environment.
- Ability to provide clear direction, delegate tasks, and ensure the timely completion of maintenance activities.
- Strong coaching and mentoring abilities to develop team members' skills and knowledge.
Project Management:
- Experience with managing electrical maintenance projects, including the scheduling, coordination, and tracking of progress.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a high-pressure environment, meeting deadlines and achieving project objectives.
- Knowledge of project management tools and techniques to manage budgets, timelines, and resources effectively.
Safety and Risk Management:
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, with a focus on electrical safety protocols and adherence to safety regulations.
- Experience in conducting safety audits and risk assessments, with the ability to implement effective corrective actions.
- Certification in safety programs (e.g., OSHA, NFPA 70E) and knowledge of electrical safety equipment.
Communication Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members, plant management, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
- Ability to present technical information to non-technical stakeholders and write detailed maintenance reports.

Computer and Software Skills:

- Familiarity with power plant control systems, monitoring software, and electrical design tools.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
Vendor & Contract Management:
- Ability to manage relationships with suppliers, contractors, and vendors for the procurement of electrical components and services.
- Experience negotiating contracts and service-level agreements (SLAs) with external vendors.
Certifications (Desirable):
- Certified Maintenance Manager (CMM) or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE).
- Electrical Engineering or related certifications (e.g., PE Professional Engineer).
- NEBOSH or OSHA safety certifications.
- NABCEP or other certifications related to electrical maintenance in the renewable energy sector (if applicable).
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field.
- A Master's degree or additional certifications in power systems or maintenance management may be an advantage.
Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in electrical maintenance or operations within power plants or similar industrial settings, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Demonstrated experience in electrical systems maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair in a high-pressure, operational environment.
